In general, says Wonderlic, "The closer you are to the ball, the higher your score."

This assessment roughly corresponds to the averages revealed, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, by an NFL personnel man in Paul Zimmerman's "The New Thinking man's Guide to Pro Football," which are:

Offensive tackles: 26
Centers: 25
Quarterbacks: 24
Guards: 23
Tight Ends: 22
Safeties: 19
Middle linebackers: 19
Cornerbacks: 18
Wide receivers: 17
Fullbacks: 17
Halfbacks: 16

The average scores in other professions look like this:

Chemist: 31
Programmer: 29
Newswriter: 26
Sales: 24
Bank teller: 22
Clerical Worker: 21
Security Guard: 17
Warehouse: 15

People are freaking idiots. All these reporters at the NFL combine think by simple workout tryouts they can automatically rank all players 1-32 in the draft. B.S. The draft can change picks, and some players become probowlers and some get out of the league in a few years. Who was the florida QB, was it Werful a few years back? Where is he now? Tim Couch, he's nowhere to be seen (though he did convert to a WR). Ryan Leaf, no comment needed.

Everyone thought Mike Vick was going to SD until the Falcons made a trade just before the draft started. Who knows about Vince Young. Maybe he'll do well, or maybe he will throw 20 INT's. He certainly has the size to play in the pros. It depends on the team, coaches, and offensive cordinator.
Anything can happen.

I would be very shocked if he is not a top 5 pick.

I will even consider a small $10 wager if someone wants to disagree.

Tim Couch and Ryan Leaf were going to be high draft picks, regardless of how they did in the combine. Both of them were great in college and had the potential to be good NFL QB's. It's just that their potential was unrealized. And Danny Wuerffel was a fourth round draft pick. And I'm pretty sure that Vick didn't even work out at the combine because everyone knew he was going #1 overall.

You're right that there's a lot of uncertainty in the process. But there was even more uncertainty before the combine. Don't knock the combine.

Denver quarterback John Elway, who has an economics degree from Stanford, scored a 29 back in 1983.

Brett Favre, the other quarter back in Super Bowl XXXII, scored a 22 after majoring in special education at Southern Mississippi.

Neil Smith, the Broncos' six- time Pro Bowl defensive end, scored only a 4 in 1987 but still was the second player selected in the draft. However, Smith is dyslexic, a major factor that scouts take into consideration.

Rookie quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, a Harvard graduate, had a very high Wonderlic score (38),

It is estimated only one in every 30,000 people tested has a perfect score.

According to the Journal, Kevin Curtis, a wide receiver with the Rams, has the highest score among active players (48).

I know that Alex Smith got an very high score...not a perfect one though.

The Wonderlick isnt that tough for a normal college graduate..but football players are a whole nother subject.

Vince Young won't drop because the team that is most liekly to draft him, doesn't need him to play for several years---TENN

Alex Smith, the TE from Stanford scored 40. Alex Smith the QB did not score as high. I don't know his exact score, though.

*edit* Here it is along with a bunch of others from '05:

2005 Wonderlic scores

I'm glad I'm not the only one who caught that. Anyone who doesn't know the difference between Tim Couch and Eric Crouch really shouldn't be spouting off about the NFL combine.

Ha, I'm pretty sure that Neil Smith (retired CHIEFS DE) got something like a six on the test as well. The only difference? Neil's dyslexic.

[/ QUOTE ]

FYP. Damn broncos trying to steal him from the Chiefs history.

He didn't get a 6. The score was reported wrong.

He actually got a 16.
