Making weird bet amounts
Hi.
Usually i will watch some good online players playing in MTT's. It's great to watch because you can learn alot. I'm wondering why players make weird bet amounts. What i mean by this is say the blinds are at 1/2k. Top online players will make bets to 4,524 or 5,349. It seems that only top online players make these kinds of bets. Average players will just make it 4k or 6k, an even number. I want to know why players make these kinds of bets. At the minute i'm experimenting making these kinds of bets. |

Re: Making weird bet amounts
Sometimes if opponents aren't paying attention, they will mistake the raise for an all-in bet because of the weird amount and adjust their calling range figuring they won't have to put anymore chips in the pot.
Other than that, I guess it's just to be original and confusing in relation to the size of your pfr in terms of BB (2.5/3/4, etc.) |

Re: Making weird bet amounts
I also make those silly bets once blinds and antes get big and stealing becomes more and more important.
As illini43 already mentioned, some players are not paying attention because they watch porn or multitable. The just play ABC poker and look for an excuse to fold. Once they see a big stack in the middle they just fold. I also like to make my raises between 2.5 and 3 times the BB as this saves me some chips an accomplishes the same thing .. so you already have to type the amount in manually. Typing in 1989 instead of 2000 saves you 11 more chips and looks intimidating |

Re: Making weird bet amounts
Yeah i know what you mean. I was watching bel0wab0ve on PXF and everytime he raised, he was raising to an obscure number. I guess it makes sense because it confuses people at the table.

Re: Making weird bet amounts
Another poster at one point said they did those weird sizes because it allowed them to slightly vary their raises so that nobody could easily pick up on patterns. If you want to raise more/less for a particular reason, if you always raise an amount that can be easily put in terms of BB's, it's a lot easier to pick up on patterns. If your raises are fairly random, you can tweak the bet sizing without people finding any sort of pattern a lot easier.

Re: Making weird bet amounts
I sometimes bet XXX1 then next time XXX2 etc. just for kicks
Got at least one guy tilted that way :P Another small + ; maybe if you do that oponents will not think you're multitabling and give you less credit for being good [yeah, right :P]? |

most odd bet sizes are made out of boredom.

Those people piss me off. I think I will start doing it for that reason alone. I do like the fact that it can make a villain believe that you have gone all in when you haven't.

Re: Making weird bet amounts
If I'm TAGing, I'll do it because if you see someone raise 3xBB for 30 minutes then raise 3.2134 BB...what the [censored] does that mean?
Whether or not it does anything (it probably doesn't), it doesn't hurt me to do it, etc. |
