Re: NY Times article on Jamie Gold
This article had some interesting, and some bizarre, elements I thought.
1. [ QUOTE ] Mr. Gold, who has acknowledged that he and Mr. Leyser had been in “discussions” to resolve the dispute before the suit was filed, referred questions about it to his lawyer, Patrick Byrne. Mr. Byrne said he planned to file an answer denying “a majority of the allegations.” “We don’t believe Mr. Leyser is entitled to any money as a matter of law,” he said. [/ QUOTE ] I haven't been following the situation incredibly closely. But this is the first time I have seen where they didn't just say they were 'in negotiations' but actually said they didn't think Leyser was entitled to a dime. I might have missed that before though. 2. His running away from his house and getting the body-guards, etc seems over-the-top to me but I've never even had the vaguest of death-threats made against me so I honestly can't say I wouldn't react differently. But the whole body-guard and moving-around stuff does come off as being excessively paranoid. 3. [ QUOTE ] As late as last week, he was cagey about revealing that he later collected the money, claiming in an interview he had not touched it, though officials at the Rio hotel said he had been wired the uncontested amount of $5,945,000 on Aug. 24. [/ QUOTE ] Officials at the Rio decided to blurt it out for anyone interested what one of their customers is doing with his money? Is this entirely inappropriate of the Rio to reveal? I would have expected an answer along the lines of, "We are unable to disclose to outside parties what one of our customers is doing with their money which includes whether or not they have collected their tournament winnings." 4. [ QUOTE ] has been lying low while struggling with a jackpot-size dose of scandal and the security worries that accompany such a windfall. [/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Mr. Gold felt it necessary to hop from hotel to hotel under assumed names, tailed by security guards, still concerned about the murky threats. [/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] he said last month from his suite at the Raffles L’Ermitage hotel in Beverly Hills [/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] He hasn’t gone back to his Malibu home (he’s currently visiting his parents in Paramus, N.J.) because neighbors and friends alerted him to “shady characters” lurking around. [/ QUOTE ] So Gold is evidently super-duper concerned about people knowing where he is. But the NY Times has no problem stating that he is CURRENTLY visiting his parents in Paramus, NJ and that one of his temporary hang-outs is at the Raffles L'Ermitage in Beverly Hills. Either the NY Times isn't very sharp about letting Gold keep his location private...or Gold apparently had no problem with the NY Times telling the world where he could be found right now. It just seems weird that there would be an article about Gold's desire to not be found that AT THE SAME TIME told you exactly where he was RIGHT NOW. |

Re: NY Times article on Jamie Gold
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] “People wanted to hurt me or put something in my food because I seemed to be the only thing in the way of other people winning,” he said. [/ QUOTE ] I'm not sure if this is just a really weird occurance or the guy is really that full of himself. [/ QUOTE ] I assume the only person trying to put anything in his food was the busboy at the Italian restaurant offering him fresh cracked pepper. That statement is so delusional and disturbing it's almost hilarious. He's basically suggesting that his remaining opponents (or--what--some rival business interest, like Pokerstars?) are the prime suspect in his death threats. Seems like a great plotline for a Mel Brooks movie or something, though. |

[ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ] Bob, if you'd like I can call in a death threat against you so you can put yourself in Gold's shoes and give us a trip report. Otherwise, great points. I don't get the Times on Sunday and imagine the online one costs money (I know at the very least I have to register...annoying) so I appreciate the excerpts. |

Re: NY Times article on Jamie Gold
registering for the NY Times online is free and pretty easy.
I don't get the times either. My Dad reads it regularly and forwarded the article to me and I was pretty sure somebody would have already posted about it here. I agree with goodguy that the reason Gold might be running-away is because he has been a scum-bag BEFORE and there are possibly some who have despised him or he has screwed-over for some time. Not too impossible given the way he is handling the Leyser situation to see that he could have other enemies too. But I still think he's paranoid and weird. |
