i think why most people dont like check/calling turn is because it's likely he either is on a draw or has a better hand. so when you c/c he can take a freecard with draws but you still lose a bet vs his made hands. so you would rather bet turn to make him pay when he is drawing if you are going to pay off his made hands anyway.

To me, it's not at all clear that betting is better than checking. Hero doesn't want a big pot, he wants a small one. If he bets and gets raised, he has to fold. If he checks, he can call a bet. It depends a lot on the Villain. If Villain is aggressive, who likes to semibluff bet or raise with draws, c/c looks way better than betting.
