I don't want to start a whole American vs. European sports ethics argument, but this whole concept of running up the score being unethical would be unthinkable in any European sports. It's just not thought about.

I don't want to debate either, but I'm interested in hearing about this....are you saying that "running up the score" is a notion that only exists in America?

I'm English, watch a decent amount of soccer, cricket and a bit of rugby and had to look up the term on wikipedia when I first heard of the concept in an NFL game. Teams do take off key-players and run the clock down to an extent, but no-one is going to get their knickers in a twist if a team 'runs up the score' on another.

Isn't running up the score in soccer just taking shots on goal when it's 2-0?

Good points about teams down by a bunch of points going for it. Exactly the same as running up the score unless you view the game like a vagina.

Nah, I guess its trying to get the ball forwards and playing aggressive attacking soccer at every opportunity.

It certainly doesn't exist in any sports I'm aware of in Europe. Of course, subbing key players and stalling when having a lead frequently occurs, but the concept of "running up the score" (with the implication that doing so is somehow unethical) simply doesn't exist afaik.

When one says the concept doesn't exist, does this mean that team play aggressive when up big and it's just seen as playing the game, or it doesn't exist in the sense that teams pull off the gas pedal when obliterating the other team?
