Random Baseball Stadium Question
My uncle brought this up as we are watching the Cubs game this evening. On either side of home place there are two circles with dirt in them, but they are a couple feet away from the diamond. We have no idea what they are for...if anyone would fill us in that would be great.
Also these circles are at fenway park as well.

That's what I thought at first but they are only a couple feet from the diamond and there is never anyone standing in them.

The on deck circle answer is incorrect. At wrigley the on deck circles are immediately outside the dugout. The circles that the OP are talking about are just a few feet to the right and left of the plate and are small in size, maybe three foot diameter. What they are intended for I have no idea but I know they are not on deck circles.

I'm not sure but i think they are used at the start of an inning as an on deck circle. But once the inning begins they use the circles by the dugout. although in this picture the batter on deck isn't in any circle.

Fenway Park has them, too. They're called fungo circles. It's where the coach stands when hitting fungoes (baseballs off a fungo bat, which is narrower than a regular bat and gives the coach greater control over where the ball goes) during infield practice so the coach doesn't mess up the batter's box and catcher's box lines or wear out the grass.
