Love Halberstam, love Ball Four, but if I'm taking one baseball book to the sesert isle forever, it's Bill James' Histoical Baseball Abstract.

Eight Men Out by Eliot Asinof. Great book about 1919 Black Sox and their dumping of the World Series against the Reds.

Game of our lives, by Peter Gzowski. A season long account of the Edmonton Oilers in the very early 1980s (pre-Stanley cup years). Don't miss the part about Paul Coffey being afraid to get shaved!

Just want to confirm that this is the guy. I distinctly recall 3 stories:
- high school basketball team plays in the state tournament. Standard underdog hero story, small town yada yada yada. They sleep on wrestling mats in the gym instead of a hotel due to some mixup. In the end they lose in the championship game when they miss a last-second shot.
- (hero) football team plays a match against a school for the deaf. For cadence they go to the rhythm of a bass drum played by the school band. That's all I can remember from that one but it probably followed the team's season in other matches as well.
- a magical table hockey game always predicts the outcomes of matches played the next day. Exactly.

I have the 3rd book, Ice Magic I think, Jared.

My favorite is obviously "The Kid Who Only Hit Homers." George Baruth was quite the hitting coach.
