Default Betsize preflop MTT/SNG versus cashgame

When I'm in my homegame playing a SNG or little MTT I always notice two "standard" raises. People who "only" (80%) play tournament poker standard openraise with 3 bigblinds (sometimes +1 BB for every limper), while people who mostly play cashgames raise with 4 bigblinds (+1 BB for every limper). So 1 BB difference (not much of a difference, but still...)

Is this just coincidence or is there some sort of reason behind it?

You almost always have more BBs in your stack in a cash game.

Not in the first levels from a tournament/SNG? (there you have a lot more than the 100BBs from a cashgame)

An interesting approach can be found in the new 2+2 book "Professional No-Limit Hold 'em: Volume I", which treats preflop considerations - basically the plan to manipulate the preflop pot but different raises for different hands in different positions against different opponents. this is an approach which will not use a rigid bet-size.

but there are so many theories on preflop bet-sizes - which all have some pros and cons.

I play both and my standard raise is 3xBB+1 for every limper in MTTs. In cash games, my standard raise is 4xBB+1 for every limper. The biggest reason for doing so is stack sizes.

Most likely your tournament friends are in the habit of raising 3xBB and don't want to change it. Your cash friends are in the habit of raising 4xBB and don't want to change either. How deep is your cash game?

Just play Pot-limit cash games and then everyone will raise the pot and you can be satisfied that everyone raises the same. Sheesh.

I'm usually raising 6-10x bb in the first few levels. This is when the bad players are most abundant. I want their errors to be big, and to my benefit.

I did this for a while, but I found I wasn't getting re-raised as much as I wanted to get re-raised. So I went back to 3x so I could 4 bet.
