Default going from midstakes 6max nl to mtts

I've been doing very well over the last few months at msnl which had a lot to do with good game selection. I'm having a hard time finding finding those games anymore though and i've been thinking about getting into tournaments anyway. Everytime i play a tournament i'm amazed at how soft the games are. I'm curious how much different is the mindset of a mtt player, how many tables(tournaments) do you typically play at one time and how much does being a tournament (and not a cash game) change the best lines to take on any given hand?

I am fairly inexperienced in cash games, but I think there are alot more tough decisions in the cash games since you're always deepstacked (and shorthanded in your case). That in mind, I'd say start playing the same number of tables that you were playing in cash games until you're comfortable with the different style and then add a few tables.
I think if you can play 4 6 max cash tables you should be fine with 8 or more mtts.

edit to add: fwiw I usually play 8 mtts at once.

I'm kinda in the same position, problem is, I play on party but even on stars i dont see how you can play 8 mtts at a time as there just arent enough running in approx the same buy-in area. Do you play multiple sites or just lots of different stakes, or maybe combine with sng's?

All of the above. I grind alot of sats for $w and $t, not SnGs so much. I'll play the $3r and Sunday mill at the same time, you might be surprised how similar the field strength is . If you want to stay in the $50 and up range, you will have a hard time getting that much volume on a daily basis.

im already spreading my action over a few sites. i was primarily on absolute poker but not any more for obv reasons. im playing on a handful of sites right now trying to find the best msnl 6m games.

I just saw(in the FAQ i think) that a good ROI for mtts is 100% which doesnt sound good to me. Maybe thats out dated since larger fields can mean higher ROI. The (lack of) volume, variance, inflexibility, and record keeping problems just dont sit well with me. I also dont like the 9-10 handed games either. I spent to much time learning poker to become a coinflipper.

As far as strategy adjustments, the answers to these questions are fairly long, but if you focus on figuring out these four things, your transition will be pretty smooth. I'm assuming you're a decent cash game player.

1. the difference in preflop ranges; nine-handed + people are more straightforward.

2. the adjustments you need to make to playing with mid range stack sizes (like 25bb-65bb); particularly with respect to implied odds and differences in the stack/pot ratios - when stacks are awkward for certain action sequences and how that affects ranges, even preflop.

3. how to play a resteal stack (think dealing with shortstackers)

4. push/fold strategy.

As someone who has gone the opposite way as the OP is wanting to do, I can say that Learned from TV's post is spot on.

I would also add, dealing with worse players with generally shallower thought processes, as Ive found the average mtter is generally worse at poker, and makes a lot more theoretical mistakes than the average midstakes 6mx player
