How do I put a custom Avatar on my account? It says to enter the URL for my avatar and, maybe I am just computer illiterate, how do I establish what the url is for a given picture?

Host it on imageshack.us or on Photobucket.com

If the picture is already on a server, right click and select properties. The file extension will usually be .jpg or .gif. If you want to be a nice guy, you can re-host the picture on imageshack or photobucket.
