Why is the 4th card called the turn and the 5th the river in hold\'em?
Just wondering...I've heard because the 4th card turns you rich and the river washes it away.

5th card is called the river because when someone who is behind gets lucky on the last card, they "Rivered" you, so people started calling the last card the "River."

In No Limit Texas Hold 'Em the last two cards are known as the turn and the river.

My understanding: Seven card stud used to be called 'Down the River'. Hold'em is actually a variant of stud. Hence the term.

Re: Why is the 4th card called the turn and the 5th the river in hold\'em?
If the final card in Hold 'Them wasn't called the "river" then a wide variety of popular names and nicknames, such as rivernuts, riveredYou, and River Phoenix, would make very little contextual sense. It was essentially a cultural imperative.
Edit: I'm not sure about the "turn." Sorry. End Edit. |
