Default Raise PF too large?

Somewhere in the essential reading section here, I found that for a preflop raise the 4xBB + 1BB p/limper is a good rule. However, I've had a discussion with someone about this rule. He thinks that this is more a fullring rule, for shorthanded games this rule makes the raises too large. I think the rule is fine and gives an opportunity to pick up the pot right there (preflop) or puts you headsup on the flop which is nice.

What are your opinions?

I've recently been betting pot and adding a BB with limpers.

4xBB + 1/limper is almost the same as betting pot + BB/limper.

Works fine for me. As Joost said, gets you the pot or headsup in most cases.
