Default Question about tipping in tournaments

Im pretty new to playing in a B&M cardroom. I was wanting to know whats a respectable tip to give the dealer once placing in tournaments. I dont want to seem like a cheapskate, but I also dont want to tip too much either.

Say its a single table tourney $45 buy-in, and first place is 220 and 2nd is 100. Would 20 bucks be too much or is that pretty much like a standard tip on that payout?

Let's assume it's a two hour tournament. It think a reasonable minimum of $20 (between both players), that's $10 an hour on top of other compensation.

This example also shows why small buyin single table b&m tourneys are silly. First, the dealer should be making closer to $20 per hour in tips at a ring table. So why would a dealer want to deal one of these? Secondly the tourney you described is really a $32+$13. 30% of your buyin goes to the house. That's ridiculous, try overcoming that rake even against the worst donks.

Why not make it a $62+$13 ($75), or higher? The house makes the same money, your rake is less than 20% so it's more money for players to win, and it's easier to tip the dealer a decent amount.

Don't dealers in many casinos make a higher basic wage while dealing tournaments, because it is assumed there tips will be less?

In any case, I think your tip was fine. There is really no way to make money long term in tournaments with such a poor structure, so you really have to look at them like any other -EV gambling and just consider it an entertainment expense.
