Default Small pair in Big blind heads up against a raise

Full game unknown player raises, folded around to you in the big blind with 4-4. Call or reraise? say you call, Flop comes 2-7-j rainbow. How do you play the hand? Do you check and call all the way if blanks come because he might have a-k or aq. Do you try and gain information by betting or check raising the flop and fold if raised? Many players would play ak or aq the same way they play aa in this spot.
Do you check call the flop, then check fold the turn if a blank comes? Does it make any difference how you play the hand depending on what position the raiser is in? Early position better chance of him having primo overcards making your hand more likely to be best?
Any ideas appriciated

I fold 44 in that situation unless the raiser is a major LAG. And yes, it makes a huge difference what position he's raising from. If the raiser is UTG, he has a solid hand range. If the raiser is the button, he's stealing, and there's no way I'm folding.

you would fold here? i would probably call here and see a flop, if you nail a set or a pretty low board you can probably take the hand.

but like you said his stats/position etc do play a big roll in this.

I agree with your last 6 words when alone and taken out of context.
