I get my money back, the kid gets a life lesson that will hopefully straighten him out from a family that cares for him. Better this (if it's got to be) than something that lands him in jail later on.

For his birthday, give him a payment coupon book for the missing amount spread out over the next few years and let him know that his shame can be let go of if he cleans it up... if you care about him enough to be tough on him.
