Wheeeee,

It's gotten past the point where I get mad. Now it's just stunned disbelief. This honestly can't keep happening.

I feel really good about my game, bizarrely enough. I'm learning a ton and not tilting. I feel like I'm playing well through the early stages, but when the stacks go in at the end, it doesn't matter how good I'm supposed to have it.

Case in point:

Hero (t2280)
Button (t720)
Blinds: 50/100

Preflop: Hero is BB with A[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], 8[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img].
Button raises to t720, Hero calls t620.

Flop: (t1440) 6[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], K[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 7[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (2 players)

Turn: (t1440) T[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (2 players)

River: (t1440) 3[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 players)

Final Pot: t1440

Hero has Ad 8d (high card, ace).
Button has Th 8s (one pair, tens).

So then I whittled the guy down, again, until this:

Hero (t2160)
Button (t840)
Blinds: 50/100

Preflop: Hero is BB with T[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], K[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img].
Button raises to t840, Hero calls t740.

Flop: (t1680) J[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 8[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 9[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (2 players)

Turn: (t1680) J[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (2 players)

River: (t1680) 2[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 players)

Final Pot: t1680

Hero has Th Kh (one pair, jacks).
Button has Td Qh (straight, queen high).

I go on to lose in the SAGE crapshoot. 75/150 blinds wtf.

Chances of him winning both of those: 26.7% * 24.1% = 6.4%

This is literally defying all odds. I mean, on one hand it's good that I'm often in with the best of it. On the other hand I'm starting to expect to lose regardless. That can't be a healthy poker mindset.

Weeeeeeeeee lolmahahaha

$1/$2 blinds, villain has $190, I cover (he bought in for $60, I felt like playing a shortstacking donk for a while but this guy went on a disgusting heater).

Reads: Villain is a gigantic nit who won't call down light and almost never raises.

Hero has A [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 9 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] X X

Villain calls, Hero raises to $6, Villain calls

FLOP: A [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 9 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 6 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]

Hero bets $8, Villain calls

TURN: A [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 9 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 6 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] | A [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]

Hero bets $21 knowing villain has a flush, Villain calls.

RIVER: A [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 9 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 6 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] | A [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] | J [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

Hero bets $40, Villain raises to $100, Hero projectile vomits, tanks forever, realises there's no way he's good here and villain has AJ every time but calls anyway because he needs to get unstuck

Villain shows A [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] J [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] Q [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] 2 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]
Hero screams obscenities and leaves almost immediately

I found this gem of bankroll management on FTP. This guy had 20% ROI @ $25 avg and was still down $500. Note to self: Don't try to jump up to $2000 HU yet.

Speaking of bad BR management. I should have dropped down a few games sooner.

The best part imo is the crazy tilt after the 2k loss.

HU forum,

This is my goal sheet for the end of the year/beginning of next year. I have a lot less time than I planned to spend on poker because of school and the debate season but I am determined to keep learning HU NL SNGs and not lose everything I have learned at the end of the summer. Thus, here is an outline of what I’d like to get at.

***WHAT WE’RE WORKING WITH***

*Starting bankroll: $750
*Starting level: $11s
*Comfort level: 20-30 buy-ins
*Games: 230 games thus far
*Available time: 12 hrs / week = 6 * 12 = 72 games / week
*Must study at LEAST 3 hrs / week to compliment your play time, this includes reviewing at least 3 losing HHs / week with popup

***SLOWER***

$11’s
Until 400 games play or the end of the month, whichever comes first. do not play ANY 22s or cash games (including 1-1 limit, the game of the devil). I will have (hopefully) maintained at LEAST a 5% ROI but we will be shooting for 9%

5% = 170 * 11 * .05 = $93.5
9% = 170 * 11 * .09 = $168.3

$22’s
Once I have done this at hopefully expected or above expected ROI I will unconditionally move up and play until I have played 200 games (600 total). minimum 5% , shoot for 9% again

5% = 200 * 22 *.05 = $220
9% = 200 * 22 *.09 = $396

$33’s
Once I have done this at above or expected ROI, I will unconditionally move up to the 33s, which I will play until at LEAST 400 more games (1,000 total).

I would really like to see myself at 8% at the 33s, and then I can probably comfortably move up to the 55s around next February.

***FASTER***

$11’s
[censored] it, move up pretty soon as long as I’m still over $600 and have time to focus.

$22’s
200 more games – until about mid-November.

$33’s
If I’m meeting my ROI goals and feeling good, play these for another 400 games before moving up (this would be towards the end of December).

Commentary welcomed but I’m mainly posting this because I think it helps to tell others about your goals – maybe the “big Other” (for any Lacanians) can help keep me on track

What if you move up a level and play bad for awhile? Do you still have to have an overall ROI of x to move up?

I always am against moving up according to overall ROI, the variance can be too high and you can really learn a lot in a small amount of time (especially true at the lower limits). Bankroll and comfort would be my two biggest factors for moving up.
