I Think most people here are offering the same advice, not to pursue something you dont like, rather find something you do and make that also conforms to your desire for financial security. As an example lets use your friend the aspiring sports writer. With a 26k a year starting salary obviously finances aren't a real concern with him, however if it were how could he merge the two? Just by being creative, what kind of sports writer does he want to be, how about something not as heavily covered but still growing, like MMA which is expected by many to eventually meet or surpass boxing. Would the competition be as heavy here? would the pay perhaps be better? instead of taking a 26k salary he could instead start his own firm covering that sport genre. Entreupeneurship is by far the most financially rewarding avenue, albeit with high risk and initial capital needs.

That is just an example and one you should consider as it may apply to you, everyone keeps asking what you would like to do and you keep answering "be secure" which isn't an answer. How about strippers, you say you like them, is that your dream job then, opening an adult club? Or as a marketing agent for girls? Maybe if your friend covered MMA and you managed hot girls you could collaborate and become friends with Bodog, lol. I will stop going blathering now and just reiterate what others have said, figure out what you want to do and make that work for you.

from what it seems, most people don't really like their first job. they like the potential from it.

money doesn't buy happiness, but it sure as hell helps.

The responses in this thread are ridiculous. I would guess the vast majority of people don't like their jobs. I can't think of a single thing I would like to do for more than about 20 hours/week. We can't all be porn stars after all.

Hardly, not only myself but most within my social circle love what we do. Its all mindset, which is apparent with people who you meet that work in the most tedious and boring jobs you would think but if given a chance wont stop talking about it.

I love drinking, carousing and such but give me a new business or fresh project and it all falls by the wayside. The vast majority you claim to represent are likely those that made the wrong choice(s).

Just realized you will likely come back with "thats crap, blah , blah, blah". Perhaps another question is in order then, given a lifetime guaranteed income and financial independence would you choose to do nothing or...

IMO most would choose the or...open a golf course, a bar, a travel company, etc, etc.

yes, but that's not realistic. i don't see how you can fault someone for taking the safe, smart, road travelled. he's taking this job to allow himself to enjoy life outside of his job.

and most entrepreneurs fail by the way.

If you have a deposit of 25%+, you will be able to get a mortgage of pretty much any amount.

The salary multiplier is only really for people requiring 85%-110% LTV.

OP, I think your projections about salary and living expenses for the lifestyle you describe are very cheery. Living in a $1.2m condo on $80k posttax is unrealistic. I live in a area full of expensive houses and people who can barely afford them, but I don't think anybody is doing anything that absurd.

Have you started working full time or ever done it in the past? You 'moneymaking enterprises' could easily go to the wayside if you start having to work 50+ hours.

Also are your figures converted into dollars or still in pounds?

use the other 80% to invest in very safe long term investments that get back 10-12% (they are out there for 6 figure + investers)
