Re: Top 10 Movies of the 1990s?
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] hoop dreams makes these lists because it is filmed over such a long period of time. i think it gets the nod more for its "ground breaking uniqueness" than for the actual story which i found to be really boring/predictable. [/ QUOTE ] No, not really. Hoop Dreams makes the list because it is a goddamn brilliant film. And personally I thought the story was anything but boring or predictable. [/ QUOTE ] Ugh. It was like watching a bunch of interviews conducted by your local ABC news station mashed together. It is interesting because it spans over 5 years. As for the plot not being predicatable. WTF did you expect to happen? Anyways, this is a documentry, not a film. Its not as though there was a whole lot of creativity involved. I mean they followed and recorded the lives of two teenagers for 5 years, and then cut it together to make a film. I think alot of it was shot on a videocamera. It gave us a good look at the difficulties Negros face in American soceity, but it still bored the living hell out of me. Obviously, given his politics, Ebert is going to eat a movie like this up. |

[ QUOTE ]
It's dissapointing how few people pick Fargo. it's should be mentioned as often as Pulp Fiction, IMO. I'll add The Royal Tennenbaums. I'm sure most people would disagree, but i think that film is immaculate. [ QUOTE ] 1. Fargo 2. Hoop Dreams 3. Shawshank Redemption 4. Schindler's List 5. Pulp Fiction 6. Lone Star 7. Unforgiven 8. Festen (The Celebration) 9. Silence of the Lambs 10. Before Sunrise [/ QUOTE ] You just went up a couple hundred notches in my book. EVERYBODY needs to watch this movie, it's amazing. [/ QUOTE ] Yes, yes, yes, I agree completely. I was gonna write a list with a lot the usual suspects that already has been mentioned here, but where Festen (The Celebration) was ranked at number one. The movie is just shocking, cruel, sad and funny (in some strange ways) at the same time. I remember seeing it in the cinemas with some friends, and we couldn't say a single word after the film. Other people were crying and I have never seen a movie have such an impact on a whole movie audience. It is a danish Dogme movie (remember Lars von Trier and Breaking the Waves? - that film had several influences from the Dogme movement). The story is about sexual abuse and it is at the father's 60th birthday party that the son Christian decides to tell the thruth. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0154420/ |

Re: Top 10 Movies of the 1990s?
Not sure it makes my top ten, but no one has mentioned As Good as It Gets? Perhaps I'm just a sucker for the feel good movies. Also, since people are mentioning some comedies, Big Lebowski is up there for me.
