The local art multiplex in Atlanta showed The Big Lebowski on The Big Screen last weekend on Friday & Saturday midnight. It was a blast, partly because I'd never seen the movie besides DVD, and also because every single member of the audience was a Lebowski fan.

I'm one of those who thinks the TBL is arguably the funniest movie ever made.

What's particularly fun is that once you know the whole movie, every single line is quotable and funny to other people who love the movie. Since this includes most of my friends, for the past 5 or so years I would say that a good 10-20% of my daily vocabulary involves quoting TBL.

When I'm not around TBL fans, here are the aphorisms/phrases I use anyway:

"Ladyfriend" and "special Ladyfriend"

"This is not Nam, there are rules"

"______ is NOT the correct nomenclature" (fill in the blank with anything somebody says)

"_____, I can get you a _________ by __pm, with nailpolish"

"what we have here is, what seems to me to be, a series of victimless crimes"

And of course...

"phone's ringing dude."

My friends and I constantly quote TBL but we tend to quote the same 20% of the movie over and over again, so we can just send one another into hysterics with a well-timed "new" TBL quote.

I was talking with one of my friends about an emotional subject and it was a very serious moment. There was a pause and I said, "Do my tears surprise you, sir?"

and we both cracked up.

Dude never bowls during the movie.
Walter bowls once, but he walks off camera so you don't actually see the roll or the pins.
Donny throws a strike every time but his last.

Not only that, every throw (by anyone) in the movie is a strike except for the one right before Donny dies.

I've always wanted to find a place to quote, "Learned men have disputed this, but in the 14th century, the rhombom (sp?)..."

It's the most obscure line in the film - Walter says it to the Dude as they come out of the bowling alley to see that 'their' car's on fire.

"It's alll water under the bridge." is a favorite of mine.

The script is amazing, but for me the little things take it from "great movie" to "my favorite movie."

A few examples:

1. The dude making a white russian with powdered creamer at Maude's.

2. The dude trying to block his door with a chair the wrong way.

3. Walter and the dog.

def my fav movie ever. i would say its the greatest movie ever made but i think that dr. strangelove barely edges it out.
however TBL def more enjoyable and rewatchable.
couple of my fav parts that no one has mentioned:

i love how the narrator comes in 1/2 thru the movie to ask the main character if he can stop cursing so often.

also love the line where the dude describes the sherrif as "a real reactionary".

also love how when the dude is at ralphs he hears george bush say the bit about the line in the sand and he then uses it later on in the movie.
