Borrowing at the table

A friend went bust (we were at the same table) and asked me to spot him. The dealer wouldn't let me lend him 100 in chips. What is the rationale behind this? The dealer said it would kill the bad-beat jackpot...is this a typical rule that you cannot lend money to another player at the table?

You can go into your pocket and do whatever you want with your money, but once you buy chips and put them in front of you, you can't remove them from play or give them to anyone else unless you get up from the table.

It's considered ratholing...what's to keep someone from "fronting" their friend, who then leaves the table.
