Easiest no ever. The kid needs to work this out on his own. Friends give you a ride to the airport or help you with $50 to make rent, not $6k when you get caught stealing.

You cannot rely nor expect a friend to ever help someone out in a situation like this.

I think this is pretty wrong. If one of my friends ever gets themselves into a jam, I'd definately go out of my way to help them out, and I fully expect them to do same for me. This is what differentiates friends from aquaintences/strangers IMO.

[/ QUOTE ]This is not a jam at all. He broke a law and is now looking to avoid punishment.

if you wouldn't lend a close friend 6k to avoid 6-12 months of jail time then you are a [censored] friend

doesn't it depend what he did? sorry, i assure this won't happen by not being close friends with people who would steal $6000 from a store they work at.

Yeah, I don't see this as being a jam.

So helping him out here means that he will suddenly become smart enough to not steal $6k again?

What did he spend the stolen money on in the first place?
Drugs? Gambling debt?
Doesn't appear to be electronics or something because he should be able to return that stuff.

So he didn't only steal the money from the store but he has since gotten rid of it and it doesn't seem likely it was on groceries.
So whatever vice he has going on that brought him to the point to steal $6k may not be immediately going away.

Also, I agree it seems sketchy that he can just avoid all the charges if he pays it back. Seems weird and potentially scammy. Haven't heard of such a thing but since I don't have much experience stealing from stores I don't exactly consider myself an expert on such situations so I guess it's possible this is legit and not a scam.

If you REALLY wanted to know for sure you could ask if it's okay to go to the CVS store and ask if this is legit.
If they balk and say there's no way you can go there and ask the manager because it isn't allowed then I think you have your answer about whether your friend/s are trying to scam you or not.
