Default Dealer question -- first to show wins pot?

At a casino recently, neither of the players wanted to show their hand. Player 1 had bet the flop and player 2 had called. Checked down the rest of the way. They wouldn't show, even though player 2 told player 1 he was last to act and needed to show first.

The dealer kept quiet and finally said, "First to show me two cards wins the pot."

If the loser had shown first and then the winner had tabled his hand, could the dealer have given the first to show (loser) the pot? Was the dealer totally wrong in saying this?

I was upset with the dealer for not just telling player 1 to show. That's the rule, right? Last to act (bet/raise) shows first?

I've heard plenty of dealers say this and they are never actually serious. They just want to get the hand over/speed up the game. I agree with you that the dealer should have just made player 1 show and end the incident, but some newer dealers don't like/try to avoid confrontatons with the players at the table.

A better saying would be "turn'em over or turn'em in".

lol Brad...like that one. I may steal that (not a dealer, but see enough Hollywood crap).

And I don't mind the dealer saying to both to turn em over...once one of them does, the stalemate ends - and that's all the dealer is going to care about in the end.

You really took him way too literal. Nothing to be upset about. I'd be much more annoyed with the 2 dorks not wanting to show their hands. I might even call I Want To See All Hands just to get it over with.

It was such a long time -- I couldn't believe the dealer didn't just make them show. I stayed out of it, because I wasn't in the hand, but we're paying $12/hour to sit there!

Next time I will ask to see hands and get it over with.

Both players were jack*sses. Couldn't wait to take their stacks, but I received my table change before that happened. Not a fun table.

He wasn't wrong in saying this since he is trying to get two knuckleheads to move the game along. However, he would not be able to abide by that if both players ended up turning their cards over.

When there is no betting on the river, you show in order of position. At least that's the usual rule when I go to a casino.

There is mention in Robert's Rules that a player with a probable winning hand should show right away to keep the game moving. It's not an enforceable rule but rather a sportsmanship recomendation. Other players and dealers appreciate it.

This sorta reminds me now of something else that comes up a lot. On the river, heads up, Player 1 bluffs and Player 2 calls the bluff. Player 1, who must show first, sometimes says you caught me in a bluff, you probably got it. But sometimes he doesn't muck, he just holds his cards and waits for Player 2 to flip over his winning hand.

If I'm player 2, I'm a little conflicted over what to do here. Most of the time I will just flip and let player 1 muck in shame. However, if for whatever reason player 1 has called me on something earlier, irritated me or whatever, I'll ask him to show before I show or muck and then I'll collect and muck behind.

So in the end, there is sometimes more to it when two guys are butting heads.

i am adealer and i do this often. I just say first to show wins, as soon as one ass shows his hand i start to push the pot to him, if the other player has the winning hand and shows i'll push it his way and give him a warning to not be an ass and waste our time. I have thrown players out for doing the "hollywood" too much.

Where do you work that you have the power to throw people out as a dealer? Ah, I only dream...

Agree the dealer should have said something before his wise-ass comment, but yeah, I say similar stuff too when nobody will show down. Not like I can grab their arms and turn their cards over.

I'm in late position in a showdown with a marginal hand I called on fourth street of a limped pot... waiting for blind to turnover the hand before I may have to show my winner.

Dealer: Don't be ass. Stop wasting our time. Do that again and have you thrown out for 'Hollywooding.'"

Me: "Can I get a couple of empty racks."
