Default packing bottles of wine in your (checked) luggage

this weekend I was traveling, and bought 3 bottles of wine to bring home. I completely forgot that I wouldn't be able to bring the bottles in my carry-on. faced with the choice of leaving behind the ~ $100 worth of wine, or trying to to pack it up safely in the bag I was planning on checking, I chose the latter. I wrapped up each bottle in all my clothes (jeans, shirts, etc) and stole a couple of small towels from the hotel and used those as well. I put my shoes and other excess stuff around the edges of my bag. Everything fit very snugly in my bag.

there was 1 bottle of red, 1 bottle of white, and 1 bottle of olive oil (I lied above). the clothes I had in the bag were a few nice shirts (total value around $200), 2 nice pairs of jeans (value $150), and other more replaceable stuff like shorts, boxers, etc.

was this a dumb move?

As long as you packed them near the middle of your suitcase, you really have nothing to worry about.

i dunno man, it's probably pretty hard to break a bottle of wine, honestly. you packed it up good too right? didn't just throw them in there but wrapped them in your jeans or something? i don't see how they could break honestly.
