From what i understand, If there is no action on the river, regardless of past action, and both players check. The showdown starts clockwise from the button. With the person in the small blind showing before the person under the gun for example.

Depends on the house rules.

Some follow the rule you have suggested, and some follow the "last aggressor" rule, which I personally prefer.

By this I mean, whoever bet the turn has to show first. If no turn action, whoever bet the flop shows first.. etc etc.

In any case, I think it is pretty bad etiquette to ask to see a losing hand if you have already tabled your hand (even if the losing player was supposed to have shown before you - it is your mistake that you chose to show first).

He was first to act, but we both checked the river. I asked, and he showed, but now that I think about it, I wonder if I was wrong for asking.

He was raising every hand and had gotten extremely lucky on a few. He was a jerk about it, though, so bad that the host said he is never invited back. (He was a friend of an invited player.)

I'm very laid back and get along with almost everyone, but I'm gald I won't have to play with him again. He was even hitting on me while his girlfriend was at the other end of the table. Classy guy.

Yes, you have the right to ask to see his hand even if he mucks. Make sure that the hand is clearly mucked first though (usually in a casino the dealer will tap it against the muck pile to show that it is dead) in case it turns out to be the winner when it is shown.

[/ QUOTE ]

If its the winning player asking to see the hand most houses rule the hand is still live. Which is great, because there's no better feeling than seeing someone misusing IWTSTH and then getting screwed out of a pot because of it.
