People, please don't declaw your cats. I assume you wouldn't like having your fingers chopped off. [/ QUOTE ] This is a pretty awful argument. I do all sorts of awful things to my dog that I wouldn't want done to myself. I mean, I chopped-off his testicles when he was a kid. That's pretty rough. Hell, he has to eat DOG-FOOD every night. I'd hate that. -Sam |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] People, please don't declaw your cats. I assume you wouldn't like having your fingers chopped off. [/ QUOTE ] Seriously. Just train your cats not to scratch you, and make sure they have adequate things that aren't valuable pieces of furniture to scratch at. [/ QUOTE ] I'm curious... How do you train a cat not to scratch you if it's doing something like climbing on you and you're wearing jeans or something like that. Or jumping off your lap or whatever, because claws go through jeans quite easily/painfully! Um, just want to throw out that I really like cats and that I also don't mind declawing them, and that I know that declawing is basically removing a piece of bone from the front of each claw, sewing it up and then giving them lots of antibiotics to prevent infection... ... is that about right? [/ QUOTE ] My cat used to crawl up my leg (when I was standing) and it was cute. When she got bigger, she started clawing me, so I stopped encouraging her and started yelling or making loud noises whenever she tried again. Now she doesn't do it anymore. The problem with declawing isn't really the physical operation, which sounds pretty barbaric, but w/e (certainly not as barbaric as spaying/neutering). The problem, from what I've read, is that cats are skittish and don't like being without their most important defensive weapon. So a declawed cat is more likely to have behavior problems, particularly with biting. And to do that just to avoid the incidental scratches you can't train away is really irresponsible. |
