Default BRAG: Just got this rig for work

2 QUAD core Xeons
512 MB ATI video card
8 GB RAM
Dual 500 GB HDs setup in RAID 1

Needless to say XP 64 bit boots in like a nano second

I've been using one for a year and a half (except two 300 GBs). EMT64 Red Hat boots up pretty quickly.

EDIT: Didn't see quad cores. I've only got dual.

I regularly use a 400 node cluster, ranked as high as 329th on the top500 list at one point. What kind of work do you do?

This box was for compiling and running mathematical simulations using a product called MatLab. That much RAM is overkill at the current moment, but it won't be for long. I say 4 GB will be standard in the workplace in 3 or 4 years.
My company has a philosophy of buy too much now so we don't have to buy again in 2 years. It also allows them to "pass down" very good equipment to other employees.

I'm the assistant network administrator, so I don't use this box, I just set it up. I can't stand math. I have to stick with my personal workstation with 2 dual core 3 Ghz Xeons, 5 GB RAM and dual 300 GB HDs. Running Vista 64 bit Ultimate

This depresses me every time I hear it.

Why do people waste so much computer power running simulations with Matlab? As far as I know, Mathworks hasn't even released their multiprocessor of it yet, making dual quad cores a retarded amount of overkill. Tell you mathematicians to learn a real language (C, fortran) and MPI, it'll save them so much time.

And no, 8 gigs is not overkill for (some) mathematical modeling. I could easily jam that up with a couple programs I have.
