Bluff river raise

KQs in the hijack. Folded to me, i raise. SB 3bets, i call.

Flop comes 3/10/J no flush draw.

He bets, i raise, he 3bets, i call.

Turn comes a 3.

He bets, i call.

River comes a J.

He bets, i raise?


I havent shown down any bluffs yet and my VPIP is likely far less than normal due to a cold run of cards. He's folded a few winners up to this point heads up against me, but doesnt know it. He's pretty decent. We spoke about net play, and he's a regular at 10/20 and (from what i gather) quite successful. He hasnt gotten out of line yet. Ive seen him raise/fold a turn against a guy earlier on with TPTK.

I don't like it. Villain obviously has a hand and it'll only cost him one more bet to see a showdown. If you had a read that said villain is capable of making tough laydowns then I'd like it.

If he is a good player he could be doing this with 77 and may lay it down on the river. I think it's a pretty good play, should work one in 5 times. Obviously you thought that since this fellow was capable of folding good (winning) hands, he would do it here too.

I think some of you are giving way too much credit to the hand range of what a competent player is 3betting here.


It has to work about 1/5 times to be worthwhile. And when i say work, i mean he either has to fold a winner or give up on a bluff that i otherwise would have won if i just called. Whether calling is better htan folding is another story. Getting paid 8:1 by a competent player who views me as weak/tight most likely, i think it's close as to whether i should show down my king high to begin with. But all of the value in calling is gained when i raise anyways, i just contribute one more bet to potentially get folds from better hands as well such as mid-ish pairs.

I dont think any of the 3 possible actions is all that bad.
