My thinking on the flop is he will bet the flop with any pocket pair, or flush draw. After he checked the turn I decided it was quite possible my 77 is a higher pocket pair than he has. So, when the river counterfeits it, and he bets, it just seems entirely possible that he can be betting 66. From his perspective with his 99, I don't see how he can think I have KQo (so it'd pretty much have to be KsQs), and it's still possible I can have a JJ or whatever if I got cute and didn't cap. In any case, I think he must've bet it thinking if I had a K hi flush draw I'd call. And I called because I thought 66 could be in his range. Am I misreading this or does his line on the river make absolutely no sense as does his explanation?

Makes sense to me but then Hoss' play makes sense to me too in some ways. Schneids calls tons of bets preflop and then just calls the flop with tons of people left behind him, Hoss is terrified Schneids has something like AQ or 88 and is sucking people in on the flop. Then when he checks the river Hoss knows he has the nuts IMO so I don't see why he wouldn't bet it. That's the only part of Schneids' post that doesn't make sense to me, it seems like an easy bet for Hoss but Schneids was surprised he made it.

Mike,
I'm usually on a similar wavelength with you, but here you've just thrown me. Couple things.... a) 66 should be a very small percentage of his range given that there was an UTG raise and a coldcall before he 3 bet it. b) You don't beat 66. c) His play in this hand is nothing but standard stuff. When I first read it in your blog, no offense, but it appeared that you had misread the board or something.

Hate to ever comment on a Schneids hand his results speak for themselves and he tends to have great instincts, but here goes....
I dont like the river call at all, but I think it is far from the biggest mistake made in the hand.....a 3 bettor leads the AA8 flop and you have 3 people to act behind you and you have 77, why not just ditch it then and move on to the next hand....did you really call 2.5 bets then 1 more preflop hoping 77 was the biggest pr and no A out there? My guess is with 21 small bets out there your peeling 1 to hit the set and then your done with it and when everyone behind you folds and the turn goes check check you decide to make the thin call. The problem is there is too great a chance this is going to cost you more than 1 bet on the flop....you get lucky this time and escape with 1 bet on the flop, but with this group, I have to say way more times than not, your facing multiple flop bets....
