Checked at river -- rules for showing cards?
In a tourney, when both (only two players left in example) people check the river, if you ask are you entitled to see your opponent's hand before it is mucked? (You have shown yours and opponent concedes the hand to you.)
Sorry, tried a search and came up with too many posts.

The rule for requesting to see cards is desigend to prevent collusion. Since no collusion is possible I would say the answer is no.
Did you follow the rules for showing the hands down? Was he required to show first but you jumped the gun, allowing him to muck?

You're "entitled" to see it if you play online and think the live rules for seeing a hand is simply to satisfy curiosity. Technically IWTSTH is for suspected collusion. You won the hand. Stack your chips with class. Let the loser muck quietly.
But, yes, you are allowed to see them. You're also allowed to have everyone think you're a jerk. [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

He was first to act, but we both checked the river. I asked, and he showed, but now that I think about it, I wonder if I was wrong for asking.
He was raising every hand and had gotten extremely lucky on a few. He was a jerk about it, though, so bad that the host said he is never invited back. (He was a friend of an invited player.) I'm very laid back and get along with almost everyone, but I'm gald I won't have to play with him again. He was even hitting on me while his girlfriend was at the other end of the table. Classy guy.

If he was first to act then depending on the house rules he may have been required to show first. Some will go back to last action and who initiated. So if he bet turn and you called then he is required to show first. Others might require showing in order of play if final round is checked. Again he would have to show first. Only if you go back to last action and you initiated it...which sounds like it would be him checking and then you bet, he calls, would you be required to show first.
But once again in the best interest of the game if you think you have a winner there is no reason to wait for the other player, except you want to make them show their cards, so you need to be careful if you do this to not come off as the jerk. It's similiar to slowrolling - allowing your opponent to think he won because you delay turning over your cards, when you know (either after seeing his cards or even before, like you have the nuts) you've won the hand. I'm assuming he had total garbage.

[/ QUOTE ] Yes, you have the right to ask to see his hand even if he mucks. Make sure that the hand is clearly mucked first though (usually in a casino the dealer will tap it against the muck pile to show that it is dead) in case it turns out to be the winner when it is shown. The IWTSYH is not a hard and fast rule - witness Andrew Black in the 2007 Aussie Millions when they were down to 8 handed play - at most casino's. Try and use this sparingly though as it is frowned on by many players.

I almost never ask to show (actually, this is the first time in more than 1.5 years of playing that I've asked), and if I think I have the winner or am supposed to show first, I always do. (I didn't have close to the nuts here, but I had the best hand. He had A high.) Just making sure I wasn't wrong in asking. Thanks, guys.
