Ok, my knowledge of chess if VERY basic, but all black had to do here is go all the way to the bottom row, 2nd spot from right, next to the king for checkmate?

HTF could the world champ miss that?

[/ QUOTE ]

no because then the white king could just kill him. black has no quick mate, but by moving his queen to where he did, he allows white to do the obvious mate

Having only an elementary knowledge of the game, it took me a few minutes to figure out the board posted in the link above.

I came up with this, to help newbs like me:

:-/ well, actually that move is probably the second worst thing he could have done besides what he did do since then the king would take the queen and he would be screwed, but there are a lot of moves that don't result in him losing the game here

I took some lessons from a GM and he blundered occasionally vs me, called them halucinations.

Well it only goes to show you that even the smartest people in the world are human. I play a decent amount of chess and can't see myself missing this move here, but I have missed just as ovbious moves when somebody of my ability (extremely limited compared to many chess players) should easily easily spot. This may be one reason your bet could have been -ev. Humans make mistakes, computers don't

I remember watching on ESPN and reading about Kasparov's match against 3-D Fritz a few years ago, That match was speculated by some to be fixed as well.

Rofl, by Kasparov himself! In one of the early games the computer turned down K's pawn sacrifice and it got into his head that there must've been a human overseeing the computer's moves. He psychologically imploded. There's a very enjoyable documentary film about this match, but I can't remember what it's called right now. Well worth checking out.

Edit: Sorry, didn't notice that you were talking about a match v. Fritz. I was talking about the match v Deep Blue. Film still worth checking out if you haven't seen it.

The guy is only saying that no world champion has ever missed a mate in one, and that appears to be true.

Smyslov missed a mate in 1 v Florian.
and

How about Timman v Yusupov 1992 Candidates Match
...Qe4?? and resigns before Qxf8 mate. Same thing, altho Yusupov not WC, certainly made the final 4 on 3 occasions, losing to Sokolov, Karpov and Timman.

In the 3-D match the computer made a move that looked like it was giving away a bishop. However taking the piece would trap Kasparov's queen.

I remember a lot of people found the move to be amusing, and it was extremely odd for a computer to do something so trappy. Kasparov of course didn't fall for the obvious trap and the computer basically wasted a couple moves because of it. Very un-computer like.

Black's move 14...Bd6
