I heard it different. $8 million base with a weight incentive clause and other performance based incentives to bring it to $10 million and then further team based incentives on how far they go that would push the total contract to $14 million if the Sox win the WS again.

I love this type of negotiating. Schilling clearly wants to be no where else so he takes less in base with the potential to earn more. A win/win situation.

schilling prob could've gotten like 1/20 on the open market if all he wanted was one year

I'm not sure about 20 million, but I'm sure he could have got a lot more. But he measures his and his families happiness in other things besides money. So he agreed to the home town discount.

Of course if he had an agent, no way this deal gets done as players abdicate their own feelings when they have representation.

i don't know that schilling could get as much as people are saying. he looked absolutely cooked by the end of the year, he was really getting by on smoke and mirrors. plus he's his own agent and he seems to do a pretty questionable job at it, i bet he could probably have gotten a deal in the neighborhood of the max value of this contract with the incentives, but not a lot more.

he really wants to go to the hall and he knows staying in boston is his best chance at it. they will have the SP depth to rest him during the season, he'll probably have a timlin-style DL trip at some point to rejuvenate, and he'll be ready for october.

A 3.84 ERA in the AL East = valuable. Maddux is much worse and got $10 million.

He's obviously a [censored] agent, but who knows, maybe not paying another agent any % or whatever makes up for it.

after coming back from his dl stint he had a 46-6 K/bb ratio and an ERA in the low 3s (including postseason). there's no way he was cooked

he hasnt looked good since 2004 but he gets results
