I've seen people buy into a game, play two hands and then disappear for two hours, and no one really said anything.

I am going to Vegas next week and this will be my first time to play "live" poker. I would appreciate any suggestions as to where to play, and any useful suggestions. I would like to play in low limit $20-$80 sit n go's or tournaments. I play very low limits online in ring games (NL), but I do want to get some real life "live" playing, just a little worried about being the obvious fish at the table!!

Thank you,

Toni

On my 2 trips this year I've found that MGM has had 1 table dedicated to SNG's. The game rotates between a $60 and a $120 buy-in (these amounts may not be exact but close). Each morning Monte Carlo also ran 1 SNG ($60??). Be ready for a high rake %.

Don't be shy about sitting down with $100 at a 2/4 limit game. Gambling wise the $100 entertainment investment will go further than at a BJ table. Just take it slow and observe as much as you can. After about 15 minutes you'll have the mechanics of the game figured out.

After about 4 hours of play you may be able to get food comp for the deli counter or the buffet. Don't be afraid to ask.

Thanks a lot for your answers Repsychler and Mygtar! I know how dumb those questions look, but I guess I wanna know what I'm supposed to do (or at least look as if I did) as much as possible.

@jjshabado: obviously I don't intend to.

And lol @ bathroom pass.

And it is most important to order Sierra Nevada, or failing that, Goose Island, or preferably any IPA, and not the usual swill...;-)

One of the things I learned at my first trip to a B&M location (New Orleans, report to follow at some point) was that the seemingly innocuous $1/$2 can very quickly turn into a rather aggressive game both pre- and post-flop.

One of the the sessions I played, it was not uncommon to see everyone at a minimum of $20 pre-flop and six or seven players in the hand. Shortly before I left this morning, there was also a hand that saw an $800 raise on the turn with the pot only around $50. There was a caller...caller lost despite having the best hand at that point (ace-high straight). The guy who raised caught the river for a boat...

Seeing some of that sort of action was a real eye-opener for me and may actually have cost me money on the trip simply because I was not ready for it...the next time out there, I will be better prepared to possibly see the entire buy-in shoved to the middle on the first or second hand.

My guess is that what I saw over there is the same in AC, Vegas, Reno or any of the other casinos...

Not every $1/2 game is like that. My God, I would cry with joy if they were. But I do like seeing games where there are $5 bucks in the pot and suddently by the turn there is $500.

Every experience is different. Every table is different. Sometimes it only takes one person to change the dynamic of the table.
