"Next Weekend" vs. "This Weekend"

a miscommunication flaw ensued with this discussion, when you hear "next weekend..." do you think of the weekend coming up? or the weekend that follows?

example:

Date: April 14 Day: Friday

Conversation:
Me:Hey Mary, I'm working overtime next weekend, do you wanna work OT with me?
Mary: Yes i'm busy on saturday, but sign me up for sunday.
Me: ok sounds good, sign you up for sunday 11:30-10. (signed up for Sunday, April 23)
mary: k sounds good, see you at work on saturday.

I felt the wrath of my friend as I told her she is signed up for sunday april 23rd and that i was supposed to sign her up for sunday april 16

When I say "..next weekend..." i mean the weekend that follows. If i were talking about THIS weekend (april 15-16) then i would have said "...this weekend..."

anyone else feel similiar? apparantly there is no universal definition for "..this weekend..." and "...next weekend...."

I don't fault her. Next weekend is technically the next weekend that comes up...which is this weekend but lots say next weekend for the weekend after the weekend that is currently coming up which is this weekend. Always use dates for tricky stuff like this.

yeah, next means the one after this one coming up, regardless of how close we are to this one coming up.

Friday IS the weekend. If you say next weekend on a Friday, then it counts for the next week. If you say it on a Wednesday, then I think some clarification is in order.

When it's Friday I think it becomes clearer that next weekend is not this weekend upcoming. However maybe you should use extra gesturing and/or dates to clarify next time

i agree, i specify "...the following weekend..." when i'm talking to someone between the days of mon-wed. i'm not here to debate who is right or wrong, that's besides the point right now lol just want to get fellow oot'ers opinions on what they use...next...this...blah, you get the idea

If its friday, next weekend is DEFINITELY the following weekend, friday is part of the weekend to me.

On weds/thurs, its a little more confusing...and I use the terms "this weekend coming up" and "no this weekend but next"

mon/tues, next wknd is obviously fair game

I always try to clarify exactly what date we are talking about when a situation like this arises, because I know it can get confusing.
