Default \"Checking\" then betting, weird situation

I was at Hustler tonight playing 2/4. A few guys at the table had gotten into this odd habit of asking following players if they were gonna check before making their own play.

It was heads up on the turn, me vs a guy with a thick middle eastern accent. I was on a flush draw. He was first to act, and said "check"... but apparently his intonation was such that he was asking if I was gonna check. I took it to mean he checked, and checked myself. He said "No, I was asking you", then he bet the turn. WTF. The dealer asked if I wanted to call the floor but I didn't want to upset the table. The free river card would have been nice though. I folded to his bet since the pot was pretty small.

How should I have handled this? What do you think the floor would have done?

I think you played it fine since it was a small pot, but it sure looks like an angle shoot to me. I agree with not calling the floor, but I would definitely ask the dealer to put a stop to it.

after he bet, you should've raised just to make him stop it.

Don't play at a $2-4 table where the pot is too small to call with a flush draw. Especially in Los Angeles.

Wait until you have a hand. Then when they ask if you are going to check the turn, say yes. When they bet, raise it.

Why couldn't the dealer handle this himself. Seems pretty cut and dry that this was a check

Dealers are afraid of offending players because they may lose a tip. Heaven forbid they do their job.
