Re: Rant: People who can\'t spell
[ QUOTE ]
I know there will be some who will want to respond calling me a nit, saying it doesn't really matter as long as your audience knows what you're talking about. Well, no, as far as conveying the information at hand, it doesn't matter much, but as far as you not looking like a complete idiot, yeah, it's pretty [censored] important. [/ QUOTE ] Content of what someone is saying, far outweighs spelling in terms of looking like a complete idiot. Especially if the point gets across. Stopping a whole dialog to point out a misspelling is pretty nitty, not to mention condescending. Which can make the person hung up on spelling look like someone who's trying to find anything to make themselves out to be superior to others because they can point out a petty mistake unrelated to a topic. b |

Re: Rant: People who can\'t spell
I thought it was pretty standard knowledge that some people are bad at spelling, just like many people are bad at math? No matter how much you try to "teach" these people to spell, they are always going to have difficulty doing it. I found bad spelling was particularly rampant at school amongst all the outstanding engineers. I don't think this is attributable to any laziness or lack of education.

Not being able to spell makes you look like a careless person who doesn't pay enough attention to the world around you to learn correct spellings. [/ QUOTE ] I completely agree. I usually never point out spelling/grammar mistakes because I know the response will be "jeez, this is an internet message board, who gives a [censored]" or something like that. They'll just call me a nit and I don't really have a response to that so I usually don't bother. |

Re: Rant: People who can\'t spell
[ QUOTE ]
Dyslexia is bunk. Some people are just more intelligent and better at processing information than others. [/ QUOTE ] Awesome. [ QUOTE ] Do that many people really never read books, newspapers or magazines? [/ QUOTE ] I think pretty much, yeah. I think this problem, due to the IM'ing and e-mail and all, is only going to get much worse. Soon "lol" and "kthx" will be in the OED. -Al |

Re: Rant: People who can\'t spell
Their are simple spelling mistakes, and then there is just completely mispelling a common word. The latter is a bad indication imo

Re: Rant: People who can\'t spell
I spell very poorly in general.
Spell-checker allows me to remain this way with very little concern. My business documents have perfect spelling. Here, it is more a lack of caring. When I post, I am esentially 'talking'. I am more concerned with my thought/point then my spelling. |
