Default Getting a used laptop for $300, good deal ?

Toshiba Tecra M1, used. 512mb ram, 20gb hd. 1,4 ghz pentium 4.

Is this a good deal ??

Be careful if you're getting this on ebay. I got ripped off on something similar. Make sure the seller has lots of feedback and read all negative feedback. Make sure there isn't a bunch of negative feedback left recently. $300 for the laptop seems like a good deal but I'm no expert in laptop prices.

well if you value battery life and can deal with so-so for performance for this laptop compared to other laptops at the time it came out in early 2003.

I would check out the offers from Office max, staples, and Best Buy. Ive seen low end new laptops in the 300-500 range after rebates. They include the centrino chip. You are getting a p4 that will run very very hot. 20GB drive is very small. You will be at less than 33% very quickly and the hard drive will slow down your system. New laptop drives will run you about a hundread bucks for a 60GB model.
