Default absolute check rejected by credit union

I received check 2 days ago from a payment center on behalf of Absolute, deposited at my credit union and the money was in my acct. Got a call from CU today saying the check was from Canadian bank and that they could not process it. I can go get it or they can try to send it off for a 4 week process of cashing it themselves, for canadian-to-US value (???). Anyone know if it's a credit union issue? Should I open acct at a bank, if so which one? I've received lots of checks from absolute and never had a prob before, but I do believe all were US based banks. E-mail absolute and ask for another check drawn on US Bank? Any help is appreciated, thanks

All international checks go through a clearing house, so to speak. Some banks will credit you immediatley (like a loan) but if it doesn't clear it will be charged back to your account. Just normal procedure in my limited experience.

I had a problem with credit union, tell them to call the numbers on the check. They put a hold on mine and it cleared in about 2 weeks i think.

Just wanted to give a semi-result on this. Went to my CU and picked up the check, tried Moneybox and Ace, both of whom do not cash international checks. I then tried my local bank and they said to try a bigger bank (Chase, Wells Fargo, etc) who has the capacity to deal with foreign currency. Went to Chase and set up a checking acct (free) and they said it should clear in a couple of days. Anyway, thanks for the responses and hopefully anyone US who receives a check from Absolute anytime soon that's drawn on a Canadian bank can avoid the same delays that I incurred. Just go to a major bank and set up an account if you don't already have one. Later

I got a check from UB from a canadian bank. I use Chase and they put a hold on it. A few weeks later they sent me a letter saying they would not cash it. I called the bank and they said that the canadian bank said the company signatures on the check did not have proper authorization. I have also gotten another check recently from UB with the same signatures from the same company. I am currenty trying to get ub to cancel the checks and send me checks from a different bank.

I'm getting the runaround w/ a UB check at BoA. It's been two biz weeks. They're trying to tell me it needed to be sent back to Canada to be converted, even though it clearly stated it was in US funds and I've cashed a couple of identical checks there previously w/o incident.
