I like Francona, though at times I think he carries managing for the long run to an extreme. But considering the bad managers the Sox have had: Kevin Kennedy, Butch Hobson, John McNamara and Jimy Williams (aka the worst manager in the history of baseball), I'm pretty happy with this guy.

You must have forgot Joe Kerrigan.

And your posts trolling me are certainly a great asset to the forums. Stay classy buddy.

It's always great when the schmuck with 100 posts calls the guy with 6,000 posts a troll. Great stuff farside; you make vyse seem like a quality poster.

Is there a general Best Manager in the game consensus among stat heads? I think i remember BP liking Mike Scioscia the most, but i cant remember any recent discussion on this here.

One of the things that's annoying about this forum is when people don't understand things they are not simply taught why they are wrong, but are usually mocked and laughed at.

So...Farside...The reason why GMs must not worry about the way their teams are built for the postseason is because by doing so they likely would not have a chance to play in them.

Unlike basketball, hockey, where half the teams make the playoffs, and football where 40% do, only 8/30 teams make the MLB playoffs! So while, NBA execs can structure a mediocre team/rest key players for playoff success and limp in with a middling record, baseball GMs cannot afforded this luxury.

So when you have a medium to low payroll, like the As, Twins, and now the Braves, you simply must do your best to make the lottery that is the postseason. Why is it a lottery?

Again, baseball is a 162 game season, demanding both depth on your bench, rotation, and bullpen. In the playoffs, teams get by with less starters, less relievers, and usually don't have to plan for the inevitable injuries.

This, coupled with the fact that the division series is a ridiculous 5 GAMES LONG makes the playoffs and the eventual champion more often the team that is playing its best at the time than the best team in the regular season.

BTW, is anyone else as disgusted with the 5 game division series as I am?

Man, I knew the Beane fanboys were going to get their panties in a bunch when I made my original comment, but seriously... you do realize he's just a man right, not a god?

I think Beane is an arrogant [censored], but you can't argue with the results.
