Wouldn't have thought about it for a second if it were in Italian, however. Argentinians seem to think they live somewhere in pre-WWII Europe.
Byethebye, in the early 20th Century that country was one of the most prosperous in the world, with every reason that prosperity would continue. However, due to what I gather was a slow evolution of social attitudes that encouraged a culture of entitlement, plus general civic incompetence, lead to a slow erosion of that wealth and many of the problems you see today. It's a good object lesson for Americans, better perhaps than these comparisons to Rome. The Cheneys et al don't understand the vast, gross costs of their incompetent policies and skewered, might makes right world view, and they don't have the courage (as evidenced by the last 6 years of total GOP control of the government purse strings) to exercise prudence and restraint in governance. Guns+Butter+Godmituns could bring us, a country rich beyond reason, crashing into ruin yet. Though it would take some time.
