Types of Limit Holdem Games
As you can tell from my recent posts, I have been talking about this a lot lately so I just wanted to get it all out here so I can just stop.
Anyhow these are the types of Limit Holdem games there are these days and I just wanted to talk about each one and how you should play it. Loose/Passive - These are games I would title "calling station" games and are usually found in most low limit live games in casinos and cardrooms. In these games you have lots of bad players who limp and call preflop so you have lots of multiway pots where you have to wait and hit big hands and value bet them big. Loose/Aggressive - These are games I would title "maniac" games and are also found in some live games at all limits in cardrooms and casinos. In these games you have one or two maniacs who almost everyhand raise and reraise before the flop. Many flops will be capped at five bets before you ever see the flop. In these games you have to wait to play big hands against the maniac and let them bet it for you all the way. Tight/Aggressive - These are games that mostly have decent to good players and can be found in mid to higher limits live and also in almost all limits online. In these games you are going to face good players so you have to make moves sometimes and play optimally to make a profit. Tight/Passive - These are games where people don't play many hands and rarely if ever raise. The problem with these games is that you won't really find any games like this anymore because people generally play too many hands. If you did find a game like this you could raise a lot and almost run over the game because people wouldn't play many hands or challenge you when you do it. These are obviously generalizations and not the way all games in these categories play. Also you can have an overall passive or aggressive game and still have individual people in the game playing differently that you have to adjust to. Any info or comments you have on these types of games and how you play them will be appreciated. |

Re: Types of Limit Holdem Games
Wow no response.
I guess this stuff is just standard boring or not worthy of discussion. Doesn't anyone play in different types of LHE games? |

The looser games are more profitable, but more swings.
The tighter games are more frustrating. -J |

Re: Types of Limit Holdem Games
Any 2/4 or 3/6 I've ever played live have mostly been loose passive. A few loose agg but there usually go back to LP eventually. I have yet to see a tight lower limit game.

Re: Types of Limit Holdem Games
There use to be low limit games in Vegas that were rock gardens during the week day afternoons. Almost all the players were locals. An occasional tourist would sit down but not stay very long because the game was so tight. On my recent trips to Vegas I did not see any games like that. I suspect many of the locals have moved over to NL. The afternoon games I played were full of really bad tourist players, although one game had one really good local player who appeared to be just killing time waiting to get into a high limit game.

Re: Types of Limit Holdem Games
Yeah
Almost all low limits are basically loose/passive. The main place to find more tight/aggressive would be upper limits (say 10/20+) and most online games. As Mikeca said tight/passive just isn't really seen much anymore. I guess like he said one example would be the types of Nits who just wait for the nuts and still don't raise or just call down with AA when they should clearly be raising with it and surprise you when they turn that over at the end. |

Re: Types of Limit Holdem Games
Porkchop,
Mason discusses each of the game types and the necessary adjustments in either "Poker Essays II" or "Poker Essays III". they are both worth a read if you get a chance. when i get home later i'll try to remember to come back and let you know which one and what page or essay covers it. if you've already read this material let me know. |

Re: Types of Limit Holdem Games
Even the afternoon games here are fairly loose/passive, at Stations or the Strip. Locals aren't all that much different than tourists. Money to burn, I guess.
