If you gave a large number of younger responsible people $250k each to invest (properly!), they could all retire early with ease.

LOL!

You seem to have forgotten a few things ...

Like taxes, both from the original $250k earned within a year, and - since you cannot stove $250 away in a tax deferred IRA within one year - from the interest/distributions on the retirement account.

Yeah, they can retire early with ease ... if they continue to live with their parents!

If someone gave me 250k, I'd buy a house.

Why? Because it's one of the best investments you can make, and no matter what turn of events of bad luck, bad economy, or lack of job, you'll have a home.

I'd be a very boring investor.

If someone gave me $250k, after paying around 50% in taxes I'd buy a car, and I might just have enough left to pay for gas and parking garage for a year here in Manhattan.

Hopefully, you'd be able to pay the taxes, insurance, etc. on a $250k house. Otherwise, you wouldn't have it long.

I highly recommend all these young guys take a look at a book called "The Richest Man in Babylon" by George Clason. Here's a hint. It was written in 1926, and is still ranked at #549 on Amazon sales. You need to learn to hold onto some of this $ you're earning now, so you can play when you want to, not because you have to.

1. 250K really isn't all that much money, let alone 30K.

[/ QUOTE ]
That's in the eye of the beholder and depends on your style of living. If you gave a large number of younger responsible people $250k each to invest (properly!), they could all retire early with ease. That's pretty significant IMO.

[/ QUOTE ]

We're in agreement. Certainly it can be turned into a lot of money with good decisions, but not enough to light it on fire as OP realizes he did.
