Like taxes, both from the original $250k earned within a year, and - since you cannot stove $250 away in a tax deferred IRA within one year - from the interest/distributions on the retirement account. If someone gave me 250k, I'd buy a house.
Why? Because it's one of the best investments you can make, and no matter what turn of events of bad luck, bad economy, or lack of job, you'll have a home. I'd be a very boring investor.

If someone gave me $250k, after paying around 50% in taxes I'd buy a car, and I might just have enough left to pay for gas and parking garage for a year here in Manhattan.

you know what man i think that good things happen to good people, and in your case I hope something good ends up happening becuase it seems as thugh you did a lot honorable things and helped out a lot of people.

I highly recommend all these young guys take a look at a book called "The Richest Man in Babylon" by George Clason. Here's a hint. It was written in 1926, and is still ranked at #549 on Amazon sales. You need to learn to hold onto some of this $ you're earning now, so you can play when you want to, not because you have to.

Certainly it can be turned into a lot of money with good decisions, but not enough to light it on fire as OP realizes he did.
