Default Common\'s Gap ads

I'm not a huge Common fan, and I don't even care when artists I do love (Ween, P-Funk) sell their songs to commercials. Hating an artist for "selling out" is like SO 1995. That said, there's something very cringe-worthy about Common prancing around in Gap clothes rapping about the Gap, kind of antithetical to the hip-hop esthetic. Thoughts?

define "hip hop esthetic (sic)".

what is it about hip hop that should preclude its purveyors on capitalizing on their music the way Sting, Madonna, and U2 (among others) do?

or is your quarrel with the product? if so, are you ok with Jay-Z's new single being used in Budweiser ads?

I thought the hip-hop aesthetic was just about capital accumulation. Cash, money, hoes. It's not like Fifty Cent has an anti-corporate philosophy.

or rappers mentioning Hennessy or Cristal or Escalades? The idea of selling out being bad is so 1960s and 70s. I think it's so much worse to have a Led Zeplin song for Cadillac or The Who being the theme song to CSI.

At least he isn't making his own crappy clothing line like every other rapper.

yeah, hip-hop culture is all about making lots of money. it suffers no angst over "artistic integrity" or some dumb bs like that.

I totally agree with this. I love Zepplin and hearing their song in the GM commercials ruined the song for me.

yeah you're right. But esthetic is a totally acceptable spelling. Don't "sic" me.

I guess I just thought the ads looked gay, for lack of a batter description.
