The 3 wood: Obsolete?
So I've needed a 3 wood for a while and spent a lot of last week demoing some clubs at the local range. For the hell of it I grabbed a taylor made rescue dual TP 14 degree hybrid and took that out too
The club was unbelievable. I could carry it farther than any of the 3 woods on a consistent basis. It got the ball up in the air so much easier than the 3's and was 10 times more forgiving. I think I ripped a couple shots nearly 250 yds. In the end, I ended up buying Cleveland's 1 iron hybrid instead, but passed on getting a 3 wood. I think what I did is the way to go but I'm curious what other people's opinions are. Oh, and I'm a 9 handicap, usually score high 70's to high 80's if anyone is wondering |

Re: The 3 wood: Obsolete?
Its possible hybrids are super silly easy to hit but I have yet to hit a hybrid that is as long as my 3 wood and I'm not sure a really low lofted hybrid is the answer for the average joe golfer.

Re: The 3 wood: Obsolete?
you're doing something really wrong if you cant hit a 13-15 degree 3 wood longer than a similar lofted hybrid club with a much shorter shaft

Re: The 3 wood: Obsolete?
Some people hit fairway woods better than hybrids, and some people hit hybrids better than fairway woods. If you find that a low lofted hybrid performs better, than go with it. Other golfers may get the distance/ballflight they want in a 3-wood over a hybrid. Neither is "correct," just find the club that performs the way you want it!
...and you aren't necessarily doing something wrong if you hit a hybrid better. Some players find that the shorter club length of the hybrid helps them hit the center of the face more consistently, and can therefore hit it farther than with a longer shafted 3-wood that they hit off-center. |

Most amatures have a hard time with 3 woods. I suggest they shorten them an inch or two and they would hit them great, same with a driver. |

Re: The 3 wood: Obsolete?
I still use my 3 wood, and I don't even own or intend to own a hybrid.

I mean 3-woods are 43.5" now growing up my driver was only 43". The average length of drivers on the PGA tour is around 44.5" and most retail drivers now are being sold at 45.5". You will find the sweet spot more often with a shorter stick. |
