Default Ask Icepick about cell phones

Background:

I'm a senior engineer with a major US cell phone carrier. My company name begins with a big pink T.

I've worked in wireless for almost 10 years now. I've been doing system design for 4 of those years.

Don't ask about the sales end of the business, I don't know jack.

Ask me about development, zoning, construction, technology, performance, the future, the past, the present, whatever. I'll give it a shot.

Can you get me out of my contract with your company? The service sucks I never have coverage enough to actually make a call within a 10 mile radius of where I live, regardless of what you're damn coverage maps say.

I'm willing to bribe.

Sales question, but I'll answer it.

No, I cant. You signed a contract. You had (atleast) 14 days trial period to try it out. You're screwed.

I recall reading about a website where unhappy people such as yourself could sell their phone and remainder of their contract to another person, but I can't recall it off the top of my head.

Never used it. Since that's with the company with the big orange X.

Should work with other GSM networks however.

Personally, I use a Nokia 6630, it's a Euro phone that (to my knowledge) has never been sold in the US. I use it because it's been loaded up with network diagnostic software.

Why is GSM so prevalent when, from an egineering standpoint, CDMA networks are superior?

We don't design or make phones. Ask someone else that works for Nokia, Motorolla, Samsung or LG.

That being said, UMA is in testing. Basically, a phone with it will "roam" onto a WIFI signal, and use the internet connection to get where it needs to go. Early word is mixed. I have one on my desk, but haven't played with it yet.
