I guess everyone here has never lived in a bad area where, yes people would rob you if they knew you had 20 bucks on you.

[/ QUOTE ]

i work 2 days out of the week in SFs tenderloin. like chappelle said, "ain't nothin tender about that place." it's still fine to walk around w/ a poker roll if you're being cautious and it isn't late at night. i shot on location in inglewood too while i was working in la. Not so great neighborhood, clearly. Not safe enough to go to a camera covered parking lot outside a casino then drive directly home, hardly.

where exactly are you guys playing that say this? I've never even thought twice about carrying around large sums of cash in a casino...it seems like one of the safer spots around with so many cameras and security.

[/ QUOTE ]

pssst....the cameras arent there for your protection

guys come on, it's ten thousand dollars. it's a lot of money. for those of you who've had fifty or a hundred k on you before, fine, congratulations, you're balla, and this is less money than that. but if it's a bad area and it's more money than he's ever seen before, of course he's right to be nervous.

[/ QUOTE ]

And he might LOOK nervous walking out of the place, possibly drawing more attention to himself. It's highly unlikely anything's going to happen, but people have been murdered for $20.

When leaving a casino with cash, do whatever makes you feel comfortable walking out. Whenever your friend goes back for his money, tell him to take a security escort and he will be fine.

Are there any stories of people getting followed, physically threatened, mugged or otherwise menaced on their way out of H-Park, or does everyone just assume that's going to be the case because it's located in Inglewood?

I've personally been robbed @ gunpoint in the parkinglot. A security officer pulled up just in time to see nothing. I made a police report and the officer told me that while it isn't talked about much gunpoint robberies are commom place at HPC.

Simple solution. Go to Hustler instead. It's much, much nicer there.

Last night my buddy won the bad-beat jackpot at Hollywood Park Casino for $9,500 +. That's the good news. The bad news was that all these bums and mooches had an eye on him that night and were begging him for $20, $5 there, or some "lucky chips."

[/ QUOTE ]

The safety part of your post has been addressed by many fine 2+2ers. This part hasn't been touched much.

If you want to make it in the poker world, you really should learn how to effectively say no to these people. I simply say something like "Sorry, I never borrow, and I never lend." That seems to work just fine. Both before and since winning the ME.

Everbody assumes that I get hit up a lot by requests for loans and gifts, but I really don't. Maybe because anybody I play with knows that I don't lend, maybe for other reasons. But it actually happens less now than before.

In any event, it's just like drugs. Just say NO!

Later, Greg Raymer (FossilMan)

I don't think anyone is going to murder for that but maybe he should just ask security for an escort out.

[/ QUOTE ]

Gambling tends to attract desperate and shady people.

Some will murder for alot less than this amount. Just the other day I read where a guy killed another guy over a $20 dice game. Don't underestimate it. Especially in seedier parts. Sure, they might not kill you over it, but they can just roll you for it.

If one isn't used to carrying that much, they tend to look more like targets. So just because someone is used to carrying that much or more, it's irrelevant to the situation since this guy obviously isn't used to it.

Working my way down the thread. Getting a check is a great idea. May take a day or 2, especially if it's a weekend, but big whoop. If anything, I'd say take it home on a different night, not the night you win it.

I also agree with F-Man. Don't lend money. Once you open that door it's like feeding the squirrels in your backyard. Once you feed one, the whole family of them are at your door begging.

That's a very good point. I believe that with few sessions of casino play under the belt, one develops a certain "toughness". This enables a person to easily deny requests for lucky chips, without any discomfort.
