Default Yeah, NYC cardrooms raided again

I wish I had something insightful to add here. A little disappointed. I'm assuming the 5-0 is already on the poker payroll but I guess that isn't enough for 'em. Last night (and I only thought they came on Tues and Thurs) they shut down 2 places.

They took everyones photos and wrote down their info. Does anyone know why they do this?

I'm getting pretty sick of it. That's 2x this month. Though, I guess its not like we're consenting adults or anything playing a harmless card game. But I guess the police have already dealt with all dangerous crime in NYC and now need something with which to occupy themselves. Thank God for the NYPD so I can sleep sound at night with my door unlocked and no bars on my window.

Uh, because it's illegal. Like it is most places.

It has much more to do with polititians than the actual cops, they are just doing what they're told. Obviously I wish gambling was legal everywhere and the thought of cops bursting into some place and shutting it down sickens me.

Just saying that perhaps your anger is somewhat misplaced. Ulitimately the laws are going to have to change to prevent crap like this from happening. Punishing people for playing poker is a travesty and we need policy/law makers to do something about it, not cops.

What would the problem be with naming names, the places are done, the info can't hurt to be out there now. Besides, if this post is based on any reliable information provided to us in the media, we will have access anyway. Links anyone?

As far as the reasons they get shut down, pretty simple. It's against the law, and police cannot skirt the law simply because the people breaking it feel "their" crime isn't really all that bad. Apply this logic, and no one would ever be arrested for anything. It's not a question of money or politics etc, it's a question of places operating illegally, very out in the open, and something being done about it.

I should mention that I speak as someone who had a piece of a private cardroom in NJ at one point in 2005 which was unfortunately raided. the police were simply out to close down something that was creating late night commotion in a quiet town. In the words of the chief of police, "we didn't want to be known as the town where the poker game was". Not really much in terms of political motivation and certainly no stereotypical horror stories such as police stealing the money or shoving people to the floor, etc.

Which places got shut down?

(Obviously don't name names, just general locations...)
