I don't know about the film industry as such, but know a fair bit about the music industry. They're kinda similar in some ways. Anyway an important thing in the music industry, if you want to get your foot in the door, as a songwriter, producer, A&R man, artist, manager etc is not what you know, because there are lots of people that know what you know. But WHO you know. Thats all there is too it. My advice would be to get a crumby job somewhere at the bottom, as a runner on a film set or something, so that you get to know people and make contacts, and more importantly they get to know you. Then you slowly work your way up, as dom said, e.g. from writer to producer to director and wait for your break. Good luck.
