I think the 1st Dune, by Frank Herbert, fits all the descriptions set out in your OP. David Lynch also made a badass movie out of it, so you can show that to the class when they are finished with the book.

The Outsiders
Private Peaceful

[/ QUOTE ]

Outsiders is a good choice but they've all read it in middle school.

I didn't know about Private Peaceful. Plot summary looks great for reluctant boys. Thanks!

I read Private Peaceful when I was ~19 and damn near cried at the end. It's a great stroy, lots of morals and it makes you think. I'm sure all your students will be pleased and tell your principal that you touched them.

What about the standards?

[/ QUOTE ]

Oh yes, we have standards, OH YES. But this list is for supplementary reading. We want a wide range of reading levels.

1984
Lord of the Flies
In Dubious Battle
Slaughterhouse 5
Catcher in the Rye
Catch 22
No Exit

and it's not really part of the literary canon but Dune is a [censored] amazing piece of writing.

Great Gatsby
Separate Peace
1984
Brave New World
Lord of the Flies
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
Farenheit 451
Of Mice and Men
The Scarlet Letter

I think these are all good and somewhat interesting. I found most of the "good" literature that is typically taught in HS just goes way over most kids heads, including mine. I really didn't understand any Shakespeare, Chaucer, Beowulf, Grendel, or any of the other "must teach" type books and still don't really. FWIW, I'm 20 and usually understood what we read better than most of my class in high school.

i think all of his sequels are equally good (if not better)....but i thought the movie sucked hard.
