I bet you no mechanic out there knows why my car is doing this...
Okay, this may be in the wrong forum but I'm looking to have as many people see this as possible. If we could leave it here for 24 hours I would appreciate it, mods.
My car loses power to the engine....while I'm frickin driving down the freeway going 65! And sometimes when I'm going 35, or whatever. My wheel doesn't lock up (thank god) and my radio stays on, but pushing the gas peddle does nothing. I have a 1998 328i with an aftermarket alarm. The alarm is doing weird things like making random beeps while I'm driving. Or it will just decide to unlock and lock the doors as it sees fit. I'm hoping my alarm is draining power/crossing connections...or doing something of that nature, so if i take my entire alarm out, maybe my problem goes away. Before I starting working again I'd leave my car sitting for 72 hours and would need to get a jump to start it. Once I started driving it again everyday, I no longer need a jump, but I would like to not have my car die while fighting traffic on the 405, lol. Thoughts? Experiences? WTF???? |

what do you mean the car loses power to the engine? elaborate on exactly what happens. does the instrument panel stay lit, is the engine dieing on the road, does it idle even though no power is being delievered etc? first inclination is that your alternator is going.
edit: it could also mean your batter is going bad. |

My buddies car did something similar. We would be driving and the engine or something would just stop working. Pushing the gas pedal did nothing but the lights and radio and instrument panel all stayed the same. The in a few seconds it would return to normal. I thought he was [censored] with me so he had me drive it and it did it to me a few times. I cant remember what it was but i know he paid like 350 to get it fixed.

It's the computer. I'm assuming that you mean the engine stalls, and not that the transmission just disengages.

I would take it to a mechanic before betting that no mechanic out there can fix it.
