Thanks for all the info/help. I have found a deal with AmericaWest/MGM though. I get two plane tickets SJC-LAS and two nights at MGM for $460. Does this seem like a good deal?

A lot of the folks here are babies. The Stratosphere is fine. I'll grant that the clientele is different from a lot of the other places you'll find on the strip -- if you prefer not to play blackjack with anyone but well-dressed caucasians, then maybe you should look elsewhere -- but otherwise the only real negative is the Strat's location. I've stayed there twice, and would do so again.

[/ QUOTE ]

If you're willing to stay at Stratosphere, you're better off staying somewhere downtown where the area can be kinda seedy but at least it has character. There are also 3 relatively healthy poker rooms there (Binions, Nugget, Plaza... I will not count Fitz) all within walking distance, whereas the Strat puts you in no man's land.

Anyway, downtown doesn't get a lot of love on this forum and I stay there every time. Give it a try.

holla

Just booked 4 nights during my Spring Break (March 3-7), 2 at the Wynn and 2 at Mandalay Bay for an average of 130/night. Splitting it 4 ways = $35/night.

Yea yea, we'll be doubling up in the beds!

I would pick the Flamingo over IP if the prices are that close. IP isn't too bad, but the elevators are hell. long wait at all hours.

In praise of the Deuce...

If you're staying anywhere on the Strip, or even at the Strat or downtown, get a day pass on the city bus. $5 for 24 hours, right to the front of most hotels, without having an expensive rental car, waiting in lines for over-priced, terrifying cab rides, and some interesting experiences.

I'm not kidding. Forget the rentals and cabs.

I often wish I was riding the bus when I'm on a three mile hike from parking to the card rooms.

I miss the adventure, sometimes.

From the published long list of hotel prices, Flamingo or Bally's is what I'd pick. Location Location Location.

Skip the Deuce. If you're going a short distance, the wait for the bus will typically be longer than the trip and you coulda walked it faster. If you're going a long distance, you're going to get really annoyed with the billions of stops the bus makes with lots of very slow people getting on and off at each stop. Life is too short and vacations cost too much to spend an hour on the Deuce going from Tropicana to downtown.

If you are planning on playing some poker you can get the Wynn for $129 weekdays and $199 weekends for 6hrs play per day. Blows away any similar priced properties on your list.

Another good idea for transportation can be found in the first paragraph of one of the all time greatest 2+2 trip reports.
